When it comes to finding a new adrenaline rush, there’s not much that will hold back BAFTA-winning TV star Steve Backshall and the equally enthusiastic Team GB rower Helen Glover MBE. So when they popped down to Ultimate Ninja UK – a newly constructed, indoor obstacle course in Essex, you could be sure the challenge was on.
Ultimate Ninja UK is a unique dual-lane indoor obstacle course racing and training facility based in Colchester. The purpose built facility features a range of challenging fixed and moving obstacles and apparatus similar to those seen on the popular warrior TV show.
As you can imagine, the sheer height and scale of many of the obstacles requires a certain amount of precaution and safety factored into the design. This includes the use of crash mats to provide safety in the event of falls and other soft flooring materials around those obstacles that are tackled nearer to ground level.
In order for competitors to feel safe and supported, the centre required floor mats consistent with providing a safe surface for lower altitude falls – while being conducive to explosive sprint starts and generally ensuring that participants can operate at their maximum potential.
Ultimate Ninja UK chose a mix of 20mm and 40mm jigsaw mats from MMA Mats for all areas that didn’t specifically require crash mats. With a predominantly orange and black theme in their branding, the centre chose a contrasting blue colour to create a clear separation between the obstacles and floor. Centre owner Karen Doyland remarked:
“We were keen to make Ultimate Ninja UK as challenging and as much fun as we could – accommodating everyone from elite obstacle athletes to children as young as 8.”
Prior to the grand opening at Ultimate Ninja UK, the mats were put through their paces by amateur athletes and children alike, not to mention the extremely up-fot-it Steve and Helen, and the centre were pleased with the results. However, there was still room for improvement as Kared Doyland further explained:
“We also wanted to make the whole Ultimate Ninja UK experience as safe as possible – and we noticed during some shake-down tests how people could fall from even the very low-level slack line and fall to rest some distance from the obstacle itself. It was at this point that we decided to mat the whole area – and we’re very pleased we did, it provides real peace of mind and looks good too, thank you MMA Mats!”
So there you have it, create some indoor obstacle madness, throw in a couple of sporty celebrities and MMA Mats are well and truly tested.
